This kindle edition of the Grantville Gazette Vol 24 is derived directly from the on-line edition at http//www.grantvillegazette.com.

It is different than the editions provided by Baen and webscriptions, has somewhat different content and different formatting.

As always with anything related to 1632, it is provided entirely without DRM of any kind. We hope you enjoy it.

If you aren't familiar with the Grantville Gazette, some background may be in order

The Grantville Gazette originated as a by-product of the ongoing and very active discussions which take place concerning the 1632 universe I created in the novels 1632, 1633 and 1634 The Galileo Affair (the latter two books co-authored by David Weber and Andrew Dennis, respectively). This discussion is centered in one of the conferences in Baen's Bar, the discussion area of Baen Books' web site (www.baen.com). The conference is entitled "1632 Tech Manual" and has been in operation for almost five years now, during which time over one hundred thousand posts have been made by hundreds of participants.

Soon enough, the discussion began generating so-called "fanfic," stories written in the setting by fans of the series. A number of these, in my opinion, were good enough to be published professionally. And, indeed, a number of them were—as part of the anthology Ring of Fire, which was published by Baen Books in January, 2004. (Ring of Fire also includes stories written by established authors such as myself, David Weber, Mercedes Lackey, Dave Freer, K.D. Wentworth and S.L. Viehl.)

The decision to publish the Ring of Fire anthology triggered the writing of still more fanfic, even after submissions to the anthology were closed. Ring of Fire has been selling quite well since it came out, and I'm putting together a second anthology similar to it which will also contain stories written by new writers. But, in the meantime . . . the fanfic kept getting written, and people kept nudging me—okay, pestering me, but I try to be polite about these things—to give them myA feedback on their stories. The problem, from my point of view, was that that involved work for me with no clear end result I could see.

Hence . . . the Grantville Gazette.

Now, beginning in 2011, the Gazette is available in a variety of Electronic Publishing editions, including this one.

So far as I'm aware at least 32 of the on line Gazettes are available on Kindle, I gleefully took advantage of that and downloaded it all, even the volumes that had been made available in book form. All of the Gazettes have really good stories, and I even enjoy the scientific stuff, don't always understand all of it, but there is merit in trying, & it is good for you to try new things. Some of the secondary characters in the books are having very exciting and varied experiences in serial stories running through the various issues, and I had a really good week or two reading my way through the events in their lives. This review is for #24, but it's really for all of them. They apparently really try to keep continuity consistent, and accurate, which has caused a few Ah-Ha moments for me in the books, always a pleasure. Eric Flint, I truly Hope you outlive me.Grantville Gazette Volume 1

Grantville Gazette Volume 24 eBook Eric Flint Garrett Vance Paula Goodlett Reviews

I was interested in the Ironclad/boat/something on the cover. No mention in the book so far. Decent pastiches about life in the seventeenth century.
Potential story lines abound here.
I own almost all the 163X books, including all the Gazettes. I love that Flint was open to letting so many other writers play in his sandbox. I know that there are a few central characters whose stories are his alone, but there are soooooo many other stories to tell in this universe that I can't see them running out anytime soon. Because the storylines meander, even wander, through the novels, backing and forthing along the timeline, you can pretty much dip your toe into any point along the way and test the waters. I think that these are especially good stories because they are not exclusively about the aristocracy. Flint and Co. give peasants equal billing and that's an empowering attitude. Be prepared to spend lots of money, though. Once you get hooked on these it's hard not to want them all.
So so
The actual stories are great but the tech babble articles are unreadable...skip them. Borrow or get the library to get it.
If it's Ring of Fire I can't wait!
In the first story the author has the power plant run by oil. In the books it is run by coal which there was plenty of because of the coal mins and miners. They used the coal tar for things also. I think authors should research the previous books before making up stories.
As usual, interesting character development of persons of that era. Possibility of future adventures for them. I was surprised by the technical writings, but that does give you depth in the use of technology of being applied in the stories.
